About the ranking
Since 2016 there is an official ranking system for countries with male athletes in the European Footvolley League.
In 2019, we had a full Tour with 3 Qualifiers (EFVL Major 1000) and 1 EFVL Finals 2000 event. In 2021, we hosted only 1 final Championship in Germany. In 2022, we had an EFVL Major 1000 Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany and an EFVL Finals 2000 in Rome, Italy. In 2023, there were 5 tournaments: the EFVL Open 500 in Podersdorf, the EFVL Major 1000 in Schwäbisch Gmünd, the EFVL Open 500 in St-Laurent-du-Var, the EFVL Open 500 in Hartberg and the EFVL Finals in Albufeira. A tour of tournaments like that is the main goal of the federations' competition structure.
Since the pandemic, only the European Championship took place once a year.
The current ranking is based 50% on points from the year before last, as well as on points from the previous European Championships and the international nation tournaments held in accordance with EFVL regulations, that took place up to 12 weeks before the Championships.
Example:
For a European Championship took place - for example - at 04th of October 2025:
50% of the points of 2023
+ Points of the previous European Championship 2024
+ Points of all international nation tournaments accordance EFVL regulations
between the European Championship 2024 till 11th of Juli 2025.
In case of tie breaks between countries, we separated them with the following tiebreakers:
Match wins
Head to head
Point difference
Ranking points system
This is the EFVL Major 1000 ranking point system used for all tournaments since 2016. In an EFVL Open 500 only 50% of these points will be given. In the EFVL Finals 2000 event at the end of a tour, these ranking points count double.
| Points | Description | |
| 1000 | Winner | |
| 800 | Second place | |
| 700 | Winner 3rd place match | |
| 600 | Loser 3rd place match | |
| 500 (quarter finals) | Losers of quarter finals | |
| 350 (eight finals) | Losers of eight finals | |
| 200 (group stage) | Last in group |
At the start of the season, EFVL uses the ranking points of the previous season to send invitations and calculate the seeding. After the first qualification tournament, 50% of the points of the previous season are still counted together to 100% of the points of that first qualification tournament. After the second, third etc qualification tournaments only the points of the current season will be counted to calculate the seeding and send the invitations for the Finals.
How do countries qualify for the Finals?
All internation nation tournaments according EFVL regulations are part of the upcoming European Championship. There are 2 levels of qualification events: EFVL Major 1000 pts and EFVL Open 500 pts. The ranking after the last qualification event, latest 12 weeks before the Championship, decides which member nations get a spot and how many spots. Also, the Group seeding is up to the EFVL-Ranking.
European Championship for Men (with Qualification Event)
16 Teams, Top 3 Nations get 2 seeds, Nations ranked 4 to 9 get one direct seed, the host nation gets a direct seed (seed no. 10). The maximum number of direct seeds per country is two. So if the host nation is one of the top 3 and already has a 2nd team, the member nation ranked on the 10th place will get a direct seed. The last 3 seeds can be awarded in the qualification tournament.
European Championship for Men (without Qualification Event)
16 Teams, Top 3 Nations get 2 seeds, Nations ranked 4 to 12 get one direct seed, the host nation gets a direct seed (seed no. 13). The maximum number of direct seeds per country is two. So if the host nation is one of the top 3 and already has a 2nd team, the member nation ranked on the 13th place will get a direct seed.
European Championship for Women (without Qualification Event)
8 to 12 Teams, since 2026 the nation with the European Champion of the previous year get a 2nd seed, Nations ranked 2 to 7/11 get one direct seed, the host nation gets an extra seed (seed no. 8/12). The maximum number of direct seeds per country is two. So if the host nation is the nation with the European Champion of the previous year and already has a 2nd team, the member nation ranked on the 8/12th place will get a direct seed.
Also, good to know, the winners of this “EFVL-Final” event are the official European Champion, no matter how many ranking points earned after the season.
Seeding regulations
Groups are seeded according to the ranking from the Top with the first teams in the “snake system” first all no. 1 Teams, followed by the host nation, followed by all second teams. If not enough teams are registered, 3rd teams are possible. All interested teams need to be registered before the deadline directly with the official EFVL registration link. After the registration deadline, the EFVL national member associations nominate their teams according to their national regulations.
